Many of the naturally occurring substances in RelaxSaver have been used for centuries to improve human health. Their benefits are listed below. They work equally well for horses in many of the same ways.
- Valerenic acids: Valerian root has traditionally been used for insomnia and as an anxiolytic for restlessness and sleeping disorders associated with anxiety. It has been used to lessen depression, mild tremors, epilepsy, and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Valerenic acids ease muscle and joint pain, and are helpful for conditions associated with anxiety and psychological stress, including nervous asthma and excitability. Valerian also helps diminish headaches (including migraine), stomach upset, and menstrual cramps and symptoms associated with menopause, including hot flashes and anxiety.
- Valerian may also have hypotensive properties. The pharmacological effects of valerian have been attributed primarily to valepotriates (iridoid esters), volatile oils, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes constituents. Valepotriate constituents are known to have sedative-hypnotic and spasmolytic effects. In animal tests, valepotriates were shown to decrease benzodiazepine withdrawal and to bind dopamine receptors.
- Chamomile: Chamomile has been used to combat insomnia, anxiety, indigestion, nausea, gastrointestinal diseases, painful menstrual periods, flatulence, sinusitis, and rheumatic disorders. Chamomile is also used for lessening the effects of liver and gall bladder disease, chronic heartburn, spastic constipation, and indigestion in infants. Chamomile has also been taken traditionally as a general female tonic and a preventative for menstrual discomforts.
- Passion flower: Passion flower is used for insomnia, gastrointestinal upset related to anxiety or nervousness, generalized anxiety disorder, and symptoms of withdrawal from cannabis, alcohol, nicotine, and opiates. Passion flower is also used for neuralgia, generalized seizures, spasmodic asthma, menopausal symptoms, ADHD, nervousness and excitability, palpitations, cardiac rhythm abnormalities, high blood pressure, and pain relief.
- Vinpocetine: Vinpocetine is a substance synthesized from vincamine, a natural constituent found in the leaves of Vinca minor (lesser periwinkle). Vinpocetine appears to have neuro-protective and antioxidant properties, acts as a circulatory stimulant, and provides other effects that may be beneficial to brain function. Studies point to possible benefits for people who have had strokes or suffer from tinnitus, visual impairment, Meniere's disease, or memory disorders (dementias). Vinpocetine may also be valuable in enhancing memory and in lessening the effects of age- and stroke-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, vertigo, retinopathy, and urinary incontinence.
- 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan): 5-HTP is produced from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. It is used for sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, migraine and tension-type headaches, fibromyalgia, binge eating associated with obesity, and attention deficit disorder (ADD), and as adjunctive therapy in seizure disorder and Parkinson's disease. Taking 5-HTP seems to significantly lessen the symptoms of depression and has been effective with treatment-resistant depression. There is evidence that 5-HTP might be comparable to the conventional antidepressants fluvoxamine and imipramine (Tofranil). 5-HTP appears to improve symptoms of fibromyalgia, lessening pain severity, morning stiffness, and sleeplessness.
- Gingko biloba extract: An herbal extract from the oldest tree known to man, ginkgo biloba has been shown in many double-blind tests to increase the oxygen content to the brain and other bodily tissues. It has been shown to promote mental clarity and concentration and increase alertness and short-term memory. Ginkgo biloba has been used preventatively in regenerative compounds for loss of memory and senility, in cardiac protection formulas against stroke and atherosclerosis, and for hearing disorders and vertigo caused by poor blood circulation in the ears.
- Ginkgo biloba offers significant protective action against the development of Alzheimer's disease, and some research has shown that ginkgo biloba increases cerebral blood flow, boosts levels of adenosine triphosphate in the brain, and scavenges harmful free radicals. Combined with ginger, gingko has also been shown to reduce stress-induced anxiety.
- Ginkgo biloba may be beneficial in mitigating cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular insufficiency, arrhythmias, asthma, impotence, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), senile macular degeneration, hearing loss, tinnitus, vestibular disorders, age-related cognitive decline, depression, Alzheimer's disease, and intermittent claudication.
- Hops: Hops are used for restlessness, anxiety, sleep disorders, tension, excitability, ADHD, nervousness, nerve pain, and irritability. Hops are also taken as an appetite stimulant and for indigestion. Preliminary evidence suggests hops may possess anti-carcinogenic properties, indicating potential chemoprevention properties against the development of breast cancer.
- L-tyrosine: Generally, tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid that the body synthesizes from phenylalanine. Tyrosine is a precursor for the synthesis of stress-fighting catecholamines. There is interest in tyrosine as a preventative against negative, stress-related effects: The brain may not be able to synthesize enough tyrosine under stressful conditions, causing catecholamines like epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine to become depleted, and increasing the availability of tyrosine to the brain may allow increased catecholamine synthesis. There is some evidence from animal and human tests that supplemental tyrosine may improve performance, memory, and learning ability for individuals undergoing intense exercise or exposed to psychological stress or extreme environmental conditions.
- For people with phenylketonuria (PKU) who cannot synthesize tyrosine from phenylalanine, tyrosine is an essential amino acid. Tyrosine is used to combat phenylketonuria and depression and to improve alertness following sleep deprivation. In humans, tyrosine is also used for a whole range of conditions and diseases, including stress-related physical and psychological complaints, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Parkinson's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, narcolepsy, alcohol and cocaine withdrawal, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disease, and impotence and loss of libido. It is also used as a suntan agent and an appetite suppressant.
- Inositol: Inositol functions closely with choline and is effective in promoting the body's production of lecithin. Inositol is required for the proper action of several brain neurotransmitters, including serotonin, which carries impulses from one nerve cell to the other. A reduction in brain inositol levels may induce depression.
- Inositol may be beneficial for people suffering from panic disorder, insomnia, depression, diabetic neuropathy, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, ADHD, autism, or lithium-induced side effects. Inositol may be helpful in conditions associated with disorders of fat transport and metabolism, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, intermittent claudication, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, and Raynaud's disease. In addition, inositol is believed to promote hair growth, and may be beneficial in combating polycystic ovarian syndrome and some cancers.
- Vitamin C: Vitamin C is necessary for proper functioning of the adrenal glands and brain chemistry. In large doses, vitamin C can have a powerful tranquilizing effect, and is known to decrease anxiety and be an important stress fighter. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids is the preferred form of the vitamin. NOTE: Consult your veterinarian before starting your horse on any mega-vitamin therapy.
- Calcium and magnesium: Both minerals are important in preventing nervous tension, for relaxing a tense and overwrought nervous system, and for healthy, restful sleep. These minerals should be taken together: calcium is a natural tranquilizer, and magnesium helps relieve anxiety, tension, nervousness, muscular spasms, and tie-ups.
- DMG (N-N-Dimethylglycine): DMG is an extremely valuable anti-stress and pro-oxygen nutrient and ergogenic food factor. DMG can enhance both physical and mental performance, and increases endurance, immunity, and the ability to fight the negative effects of stress.
- Red clover: Red clover is an excellent source of B-complex vitamins, which are known for their tonic effects in relaxing the body and brain. Several studies have shown B-complex vitamins to be remarkably effective against depression, panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). B vitamins can be depleted by stress and are also washed from the body during heavy perspiration.
- The B-complex vitamins in red clover support physical and psychological health by:
- Supporting nervous system functions
- Aiding in digestive functions
- Enhancing enzyme reactions controlling energy, circulation, hormones, and overall health
- The B-complex vitamins in red clover include:
- Vitamin B1 (thiamine): B1 helps maintain energy levels, supports brain function and memory, and aids in digestion. B1 is necessary for the metabolism of sugar and starch to provide energy for supporting a healthy nervous system. A deficiency of B1 may cause decreased appetite, vision disturbances, unsteadiness, confusion, loss of memory, fatigue, and tachycardia.
- Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): B2 aids in amino acid production and helps the body obtain energy from protein, carbohydrates, and fats. B2 is important in maintaining good vision and healthy skin. A B2 deficiency may cause cracking at the corners of the lips, eye problems, light sensitivity, and blurred vision.
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCL): B6 supports glycogen and nitrogen metabolism, the production and transport of amino acids, and the production and maintenance of red blood cells and hemoglobin, nerve tissues, and antibodies.
- B6 may be beneficial in lessening the effects of depression, immune depression, vertigo, age-related cognitive decline, ADHD, schizophrenia, autism, depression associated with pregnancy and oral contraceptive use, morning sickness, muscle cramps, premenstrual syndrome, menopausal symptoms, allergies, conjunctivitis, acne, canker sores, asthma, high homocysteine, heart disease, hypertension, elevated lipid levels, bladder infection, water retention, obesity, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis.
- Wood betony: Wood betony is used for relieving nervous tension and insomnia and is helpful in maintaining and rebuilding nerves, the nerve sheath (the protective covering of the nerves), and the overall nervous system. It is mildly stimulating, but lessens irritability and overexcitement of the nervous system and reduces pain.
- Traditionally, wood betony has been used to combat depression, anxiety, nervousness, neuritis, hysteria, shock, insomnia, nightmares, dizziness, menstrual ailments, spasms, strains, tinnitus, motion and seasickness, jet lag, restless legs syndrome, stiff neck, carpal tunnel syndrome, dysentery, and lockjaw.
| RelaxSaver and Competitive Events |
| Based on its demonstrated success, RelaxSaver has gained recognition as a therapeutic product that naturally and effectively helps calm and settle the nervous or “high-strung” horse. However, RelaxSaver does contain valerenic acids, which have now been cited as a forbidden substance by the AHSA (American Horse Association) and the FEI (International Show Regulations).
Because RelaxSaver will test positive for horses entering official competition, we strongly suggest horse owners and trainers discontinue RelaxSaver 72 hours before competition begins. To calm an excitable or unruly horse during competition, we suggest you use Figuerola’s Anti-Stress Forumla, then return the horse to RelaxSaver after competition. The two products can also be used in combination. |
Powder Supplement.
Administration
Administer 1 - 2 scoops twice daily. For official competition events discontinue use 7 days prior to event.
