Provides nutritional support for horses undergoing navicular syndrome
Active Ingredient: Bursitex™
For jumpers, dressage horses, event horses, racehorses, show horses, endurance horses, and pleasure horses
Figuerola Laboratories is proud to offer NaviculaSaver, the first and only equine nutritional supplement specifically formulated to help prevent navicular syndrome, the painful degenerative process affecting the bursa, bones, and tendons that triggers slow but progressive lameness in a horse’s front legs.
What causes navicular syndrome?
The navicular bone—located directly behind the coffin bone in the hoof—protects the joints, ligaments, and tendons from pressure and concussion. It also elevates the deep digital flexor tendon to take stress off the coffin bone and help control blood flow to the coffin bone. Improper shoeing and hoof problems—high heels, overlaid bar, long toes—may immobilize the navicular bone and result in poor blood flow supply to the hoof.
Horses that are at high risk for developing navicular problems are usually restricted or stall-kept, and/or have strong physical stress placed on them. Younger horses may be affected by navicular syndrome and show signs as early as one year, but navicular disease more generally develops in horses between the ages of nine and 12 years.
Why is NaviculaSaver a unique supplement for navicular syndrome?
NaviculaSaver, with its synergistic core compound, Bursitex, is an effective, one-of-a-kind supplement designed to help strengthen the navicular capsule—the navicular bone, pastern bone, coffin bone, navicular cartilage, deep flexor tendon, sesamoidean (impar) ligament, synovial (lubricating) fluid, and other surrounding connective tissues.
What are the symptoms of navicular syndrome?
The symptoms of navicular syndrome include slight unevenness on turns, shortening of stride, reluctance to go forward properly or lengthen the stride, or a stumbling gait. When resting, your horse may shift his weight continually or stand with one leg extended, resting his weight on the toe, and if the foot is pressure tested, he will usually exhibit heel pain.
How is navicular syndrome usually treated?
Treatments depend on the horse and the severity of the condition. Navicular syndrome will not directly shorten the life of a horse, and there are many ways to relieve the pain of navicular disease so a horse will be able to continue on as normal. These include trimming the feet, raising the horse’s heel, rounding the toe, and setting the shoe under.
Medicines are often administered to help relieve discomfort in horses with more serious navicular syndrome. These include isoxuprine (Circulon) to promote blood flow, Warfarin (blood thinner), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and cortisone (a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and swelling).
For severe pain and inflammation, veterinarians may inject a corticosteroid directly into the affected joint. Another treatment involves a series of injections of a gel-like substance into the joint to lubricate the cartilage, reducing pain and allowing greater mobility. Substances used in this method include hyaluronic acid (Legend, Hylartin, and Synacid) and poly-sulfated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAGs), such as Adequan.
Unfortunately, conventional treatments for navicular syndrome are only temporary. It is also the opinion of Figuerola Laboratories that drugs should be a last resort, as they are not without serious side effects. Prolonged use of many of these drugs can result in further deterioration to the navicular capsule and its surrounding tissues, causing more damage to the horse. Furthermore, the use of these drugs may be illegal in some competitions.
How does NaviculaSaver work to help prevent navicular syndrome?
One of the extraordinary functions of navicular cartilage is its ability to replenish its major components in response to the mechanical forces placed on it by manufacturing and remodeling tremendous amounts of collagen and proteoglycans. The water-structuring properties of proteoglycans—which consist mainly of hyaluronic acid, the “glue” that holds cartilage cells together—provide the compressive resilience of the navicular cartilage.
If the raw materials (nutrients) for these building blocks are not available in the amount required, the synthesizing process is impaired and the navicular cartilage looses its ability to replenish itself. NaviculaSaver helps protect the navicular capsule from further deterioration by providing proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).
NaviculaSaver also aids in relieving pinched and inflamed navicular nerves by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme that accompanies inflammation; helps restore blood flow and increase tissue oxygenation; and enhances the body’s natural ability to prevent calcification, ossification, and mineralization of soft tissue.
