Are commonly used commercial drugs safe and effective?
Inflammation is usually treated with corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Advil® (ibuprofen), Tylenol® (acetaminophen), Motrin®, aspirin, and naproxen. These drugs work by blocking the production of prostaglandins (hormone-like chemicals in the body) that cause pain, inflammation, and cramping. However, prostaglandins also have many essential physiological functions, including regulation of blood pressure, kidney function, and gastric acidity. Why are many prescribed anti-inflammatory pain drugs often ineffective?
